Early-Season Review: How Europe's Top Leagues Are Looking So Far

The new football season has started with plenty of interesting results across Europe. Some teams have made a strong start while others have already dropped important points. Some teams that were not expected to challenge near the top of the table have also delivered surprising performances.

Although it is still early in the season, the first few matches have already given us an idea of how the main title races could develop. Arsenal, Manchester City and Barcelona have started strongly. Serie A has several teams fighting for the top spot. The early results have already created some interesting stories across Europe's top leagues.

Arsenal and City

Arsenal and Manchester City have made impressive starts in the Premier League, racking up three straight victories and nine points each. Arsenal also beat Chelsea 2-1 on September 6 after mounting a comeback.

Manchester City remain unbeaten, thanks to Erling Haaland's goal in the team's victory by 1-0 against Coventry City. Chelsea have six points and Hull City has been quite surprising in its start as well. Liverpool, Newcastle, and Everton are also close behind.

The title race will become tough, given how many strong teams are competing. Arsenal and Manchester City's early performances have set the tone for the Premier League, while football predictions have helped shape expectations.

Barcelona Setting the Pace

Barcelona are performing very well in La Liga and have won all four of their games, putting them at the top of the league table. They have scored 17 goals while conceding just two. Their most recent win was by a convincing 5-0 against Valencia on September 6.

Real Madrid are in third spot and have secured nine points so far. They couldn't make it a perfect run after losing 1-0 to Real Betis. The newly promoted Deportivo are performing very well too, maintaining an unbeaten run and having won two games and drawn two so far. Sevilla and Atlético Madrid are close to the top five. Though Barcelona is leading, the season appears more competitive than expected.

Serie A Has a Three-Way Lead

In Serie A, three clubs have won all their matches: AS Roma, Inter Milan and Lazio. All have nine points. AS Roma are leading on goal difference after defeating Atalanta 2-1 with a last-minute goal from Matías Soulé.

Inter had to overcome a 2-0 deficit against Napoli, defeating them 3-2 with a last-gasp winner from Lautaro Martínez, who proved Inter’s ability to cope under pressure. Napoli are still doing well despite the defeat, whereas Como, Milan, and Juventus all have seven points.

  • AS Roma, Inter Milan, and Lazio have each won their three games and have nine points.

  • Roma top the table on account of their superior goal difference, having won against Atalanta thanks to Matías Soulé.

  • Napoli are in the running despite having lost to Inter, while Como, Milan and Juventus have seven points.

Bayern Already Have Work to Do

The Bundesliga standings look rather strange after just two rounds. Augsburg, Freiburg, Borussia Dortmund and the promoted Elversberg have all won their first two games and currently have six points all. The reigning champions Bayern have four points from one win and a draw.

Borussia Dortmund appear to be in very good form, particularly after their convincing 3-2 Champions League victory over Villarreal on September 8. Augsburg have a goal difference of +6 while Freiburg have conceded only one goal. Bayern are still considered favorites for the championship despite their poor start to the season.

Pressure Is Already Growing

Relegation teams cannot be predicted yet, but some clubs already find themselves struggling. Premier League teams currently struggling include Fulham, who lost all three games. Coventry, who have not won any games yet. Tottenham, who earned just one point and failed to score for three games in a row. Aston Villa, who earned one point and struggle to score.

Hoffenheim, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Hamburg in Germany lost two of their first games each, and Venezia, Genoa, and Fiorentina in Serie A have lost their first three games each, with Hamburg failing to score in their first two games. All of these teams have a chance to improve, but their defensive issues or lack of goals could become problems in the future. For a closer look at upcoming matches, football predictions and odds provide a useful perspective.
